“In his essay, “The Place of African History in Education in Africa,” Godfrey N. Brown seemed to have been extending Dr. Dike’s remarks when he said: “To argue again the case for African History as an academic study is unnecessary. Only those who have either no first-hand experience of contemporary Africa or have made no attempt to study the continent’s history can support such statements as “Africa has no history.” or “African History is nothing more than the story of European activities…” The great asset of the study of African History in African educational institutions is that it is a first-pronoun subject; it is concerned with learning about people like us…” (cited in Jackson, 1990, p. 372-373).
The ethos of Africa/African cultures is the developmental platform for Gaskiya’s Compound. Through Gaskiya’s Online Academy we are committed to the identification and the transference of knowledge regarding Africa/African cultures as a legacy to those for whom so many suffered and died. Should this not be done, the lack of respect we have for ourselves will continue to overshadow the disdain others have for us. And it is imperative that as a community we understand that having love and respect for our culture does not diminish our love and respect for other cultures. It is simply a natural process to recognize that we are all a reflection of the Creator and to love God is to love ourselves.
To create an environment that is conducive to learning for every Scholar, we shall be a center of spirituality and education, since the two cannot be separated. As such, the academic program at Gaskiya’s Online Academy shall incorporate; a learner directed framework, with African centered pedagogy, utilizing Project Based Learning, aimed at the development of the whole child. Most importantly, because spirituality is an innate cultural component of African culture and cannot be separated from life experiences, there shall be a spiritual fusion throughout our programming structure. Simply stated, all participants will be treated with mutual love and respect, as children of God. Programming shall be provided through a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), which shall be enhanced by the integration of Web 2.0 and other 21st Century tools and resources.
